Austroads 100-Year Design Life and Design Method Requirements

Realising the 100-year design life of buried assets such as pipes and culverts can be a challenge. A range of environmental stresses must be duly considered in the design of subsurface structures to ensure their longevity after installation.

In this webinar, Trevor will discuss the different factors that affect the long-term performance of buried assets. These factors include vertical loads, soil composition and ph levels, and the quality of structural materials. He will then go through the design methods and Austroads standards used to counteract the deformation of buried assets and ensure their durability.

The webinar will run for 45 minutes with a 15-minute Q&A session after the presentation.

Trevor Loffel

With over 30 years’ experience in Australian and international environmental engineering and management projects, Trevor Loffel has a wealth of knowledge in stormwater design and standards. In the 1990s, Trevor served as a Technical Manager with Geofabrics Australasia where he built his expertise in 120-year designs for polymer and bentonite. He then worked in the UK and Ireland, designing construction reinforcement solutions for major geotechnical challenges in peat soils. During his time in the UK, Trevor helped establish Water Industry Standards for buried plastic structures at Thames Water. He also drove approvals for StormTech and ADS HDPE drainage systems to be used widely in UK and Ireland. Trevor would introduce these systems to the Australian stormwater market when he moved back in 2005. Trevor now designs solutions for stormwater attenuation, water harvesting, detention and infiltration systems for Cubic M3. In 2017, was asked onto a Standards Australia Technical Sub-committee that was updating the Buried Pipe Design Code AS NZ 2566.1-1998 He also consulted on the review and update of the UK Buried Pipe Design Code in 2019.
